Tambopata Amazon Wildlife Peru: Tambopata Rainforest (Macaw Clay Lick) once enough parakeets have built up in the trees of the area, and they are sure that they have scouted the area well for potential predators, such as ocelots, raptors and snakes, they start to work their way through the vegetation.

Short description of the Tambopata Amazon Wildlife Peru:

The Tambopata National Reserve is located in the Tambopata River Basin covering south of the Madre de Dios River Region (40% of the reserve) as well as Puno Region (60% of the reserve)! It was established in 1990 in order to protect adjacent forests around the Heath and Tambopata Rivers.

There can be found two important ecosystems and 8 microclimates. Its rich biodiversity includes 103 mammal species, 1,300 butterfly species, 90 amphibian species and 41 tree families that contain 165 tree species! The reserve covers an area of 274,690 hectares. The climate is warm and humid with high annual rainfall.

On this interesting tour, we discover the small macaw´s clay-lick of La Torre, the amazing oxbow lake of Tres Chimbadas and a bamboo forest!

Oxbow lakes are originally wide meanders of a river that were cut off from the main stream when the river found a shorter course. In this way, the meanders become dead arms of the river.

The dead arms are called “oxbow lakes” due to its characteristic arched shape reminding an ox-yoke. The lakes are often created in low-lied plains, close to where the river flows into another watercourse.

We leave our lodge very early and later arrive near the mouth of the river Malinowski. Where is located the next stall “Malinowski” control. We also have the ability to use the bathrooms or visit the interpretation center.

During our trip we will witness the change in the environment. The Tambopata now flows faster and fans at several arms that create floodplain forest covered islands, lined with large pebble beaches. Perfect for watching orinoco geese, cormorants, caimans and capybaras places.

Chuncho : The lick  Chuncho is a bank of approximately ten meters of mud atop a side arm of the Tambopata River, where several species of parrots, macaws and parakeets gather a magic screen. The most famous visitor is the magnificent scarlet macaw.

These birds have to meet every morning to feed on the clay before flying in search of fruits and seeds in the jungle. This show lasts one to three hours and follows a specific order. First come the smaller species such as parakeets and parrotlets parrots appear later eventually be followed by significantly larger macaws bring this fantastic explosion of color and sound to a fitting end.
